Residual Current Devices (RCDs) are essential for protecting people from electric shock and preventing fires caused by electrical faults.

They work by instantly cutting off the power if they detect a fault – literally saving lives.

Whether it’s a home, office, school, factory, or public space, RCDs are critical safety devices, and regular testing is a legal requirement under BS 7671.

Like any piece of equipment, RCDs can degrade over time or become faulty without warning. If they fail to trip when they’re supposed to, the consequences could be fatal.

How Often Should RCDs Be Tested?

User Test: Press the “Test” button every 6 to 12 months (we believe monthly is overkill for most businesses, unless you’re in high risk environments).

Engineer Test: Full functional testing by a qualified electrician annually, or in line with your risk assessment.

What Happens During a Test?

Manual Test: The “Test” button simulates a fault. The RCD should trip instantly.

Engineer Test: A full simulation using test equipment to measure trip time, response accuracy, and identify potential issues.

Signs Your RCD Needs Attention:

• Doesn’t trip when the “Test” button is pressed
• Trips too often or for no clear reason
