Most people still call this PAT testing. Officially the term changed to ITEE (Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment) a few years ago, but the principle remains the same. Regular checks prevent fires, shocks and equipment failures.

Damaged cables happen constantly in these environments. Students unplug equipment roughly, cables get stood on in busy classrooms, they get bent sharply when pushed under desks or trapped in drawers. Over months and years the outer covering wears through and exposes inner wiring.

The statistics around school fires are concerning. They face higher electrical fire risks than many other commercial buildings, with a significant proportion caused by electrical faults.

Legal Requirements For School Equipment Testing

The law is clear on this. Schools must maintain electrical equipment safely.

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 cover all workplaces, and educational facilities definitely count as workplaces under the regulations.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 makes classroom and teaching spaces responsible for staff and student safety. Electrical safety forms part of this duty.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 require equipment to be maintained in safe working order throughout its life.

ITEE testing provides the proof you’re meeting these obligations. Most educational sites test everything annually. Some equipment in particularly demanding environments needs checking more often.

You need to keep records too. Test results, certificates and those pass/fail labels all form part of your compliance documentation.

What Gets Tested?

The range of equipment is extensive.

Classroom equipment includes computers, projectors, interactive whiteboards, visualizers, document cameras, laptops and those big charging trolleys that hold entire class sets.

Science labs have their own collection. Bunsen burners, microscopes, power supplies, heating equipment, specialist measuring apparatus. All of it needs testing.

Food technology rooms are equipment heavy. Ovens, hobs, mixers, microwaves, fridges, toasters, blenders, food processors. These see constant use and need regular safety checks.

Staff areas accumulate their own collection. Kettles, microwaves, fridges, toasters, coffee machines, computers, printers. All require testing.

Then there’s the portable stuff that moves around. Extension leads, portable heaters, fans, vacuum cleaners. These often get overlooked but need checking too.

Even maintenance equipment used by caretakers and grounds staff gets included in testing schedules. Power tools, pressure washers, floor polishers.

How School And College ITEE Testing Works

The process starts with visual inspection. Engineers look at each item carefully for obvious problems. Damaged cables, cracked plugs, broken casings, scorch marks, loose connections. Many faults show themselves visually.

Then comes electrical testing using specialist equipment. We measure insulation resistance to check cables haven’t degraded internally. Earth continuity testing confirms protective systems work properly. Polarity checks ensure wiring connections are correct.

Every tested item gets a label afterwards showing the test date and when it needs checking again. This helps you track testing across hundreds or thousands of items.

Failed equipment gets a different label and needs removing from use immediately. We don’t want faulty kit sitting in classrooms waiting to cause problems.

You get a comprehensive report listing everything tested. Serial numbers, locations, pass or fail status, any faults found, recommendations for action, notes on equipment condition. This documentation proves compliance during inspections.

Scheduling Around Operations

Schools operate on tight schedules. Lessons run continuously, spaces get used constantly, you can’t just shut down for a day while testing happens.

For term time testing, we work room by room during lessons. Engineers test equipment that isn’t currently in use while teaching continues normally. A teacher might be using the interactive whiteboard, but we can test the computer, printer and other equipment without disruption.

Many universities prefer half term or holiday testing when buildings are quieter. Empty classrooms mean unrestricted access and no concerns about disrupting lessons. We can move through spaces faster too.

Evening and weekend testing works for equipment that’s in constant use during study hours. Some run extended hours or have equipment that genuinely can’t be taken offline during the day.

For those with hundreds or thousands of items, we can phase testing across several visits. This spreads the impact rather than concentrating it all in one intensive period.

Common Equipment Problems In Educational Facilities

We see the same faults appearing repeatedly:

  • Charging cables
    Students wrap them too tightly, creating stress points at the plug end. They bend them sharply when unplugging. The cables get trapped in desk drawers or stood on in busy classrooms. Eventually the outer covering splits and inner wiring becomes visible.
  • Staff room kettles
    Frayed leads develop from being coiled tightly around the base while still warm. The heat degrades the cable insulation over time.
  • Extension leads
    Cracked sockets appear when furniture gets pushed against them, people stand on them, or they get shoved around during classroom reorganization. The plastic housings crack and internal connections become exposed.
  • Computer equipment
    Power supplies get damaged from rough handling. When rooms get reconfigured or equipment moves between classrooms, power bricks get tossed into boxes or dragged across floors. Internal connections fail or casings crack.
  • Science equipment
    Cable problems develop from heat exposure. Equipment used near Bunsen burners or hot plates experiences repeated heating and cooling. Cable insulation deteriorates faster than normal.

Testing identifies all of this before it causes fires or injuries.

Who Arranges PAT Testing In Schools

The responsibility for organizing testing usually falls to the business manager, premises manager or head teacher depending on how your facility is structured. Some delegate day to day arrangements to the caretaker or facilities team.

For academy trusts, they often centralize testing arrangements across all their facilities. This ensures consistency in approach and potentially allows better rates through volume.

Those that are local authority maintained might have testing arranged centrally by the authority as part of wider facilities management contracts.

Whoever handles the practical arrangements, the school retains ultimate responsibility. Testing needs to happen on schedule and records need maintaining properly. Ofsted or health and safety inspectors won’t accept “someone else was supposed to arrange it” as an explanation.

Keep these reports for at least the period between tests. Most staff retain them for five years as good practice.
