PAT Testing for Restaurants | Book Around Your Schedule

PAT testing for restaurants

A kitchen that runs twelve hours a day does not give electrical equipment an easy life. Grease, steam, heat and constant handling accelerate wear in ways that are not always visible until something goes wrong. By that point you are dealing with a failed service, a potential injury or an insurance claim rather than a routine test report.

TISS Electrical carries out restaurant PAT testing across Witham, Chelmsford, Braintree, Colchester and surrounding areas in Essex, as well as Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and nationwide. Call 01245 377 625 to book testing around your schedule.

The Kitchen Is Only Half The Picture

Most restaurant operators think about the kitchen when PAT testing comes up. Commercial ovens, fryers, mixers, blast chillers, undercounter fridges, food processors, yes, all of that needs testing. But the front of house equipment list is longer than people expect.

Display fridges, heated display units, coffee machines, tills, card readers, sound systems and any lighting running off a plug socket all fall within scope. Staff areas need to be included too. Microwaves, kettles, phone chargers and laptops used by employees all plug into the mains and carry the same potential for faults as anything in the kitchen.

If it plugs in and a fault could put someone at risk, it needs to be in the inventory. Getting that right at the start means no gaps in your documentation and no awkward questions if a claim or inspection ever arises.

What The Law Requires

Restaurants are commercial premises and commercial kitchen electrical safety is governed by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. As an employer you have a legal duty to ensure electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the recognised method for demonstrating that duty has been met.

The Health and Safety Executive does not set a single fixed interval for all equipment. What it requires is a risk based approach. In a restaurant kitchen, that means taking into account how hard equipment is working, what conditions it is exposed to and how quickly faults are likely to develop. For most kitchen equipment, annual testing is the sensible baseline. For high use items in demanding conditions, more frequent checks are recommended.

Test records matter beyond compliance too. If a fire or injury occurs and you cannot produce documentation showing equipment was regularly tested, that becomes a serious problem for both your insurer and any investigation that follows.

What Happens During A Restaurant PAT Test

TISS engineers work through the full site systematically, back of house and front of house, testing each item, labelling it with the test date and next due date and logging results using Bluetooth data logging throughout. There is no manual data entry on site which means no transcription errors in the final report.

After every visit, reports, photographs of any failed items and advisory photos of anything flagged as a concern are zipped and sent securely by email. Everything is in one place and ready to keep on file or share with your insurer if needed.

Every engineer carries a personalised ID pack sent digitally before the visit, covering their full name, photograph, qualifications, calibration certificate, insurance details and Enhanced DBS number. Your staff know exactly who is coming before they arrive.

For restaurant groups or multi site operators, TISS fields teams sized to the job. Two engineers for a single site, larger teams for a group rollout. TISS has completed testing programmes covering over 300,000 individual items for a single client so volume is never a problem.

Can PAT Testing Be Done Outside Of Opening Hours?

Most restaurants prefer testing outside of service hours, and TISS works around whatever schedule suits the site. Early mornings before prep, late evenings after close, quieter days mid week, the details are confirmed in advance so there are no surprises on the day.

Emergency Lighting Is A Separate Requirement

PAT testing covers portable and plug in equipment. It does not cover your emergency lighting, which is a legal requirement for restaurants open to the public under the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 and BS 5266-1.

Emergency lighting testing requires a short monthly flick test and a full three hour annual test where every light must stay on for the duration. TISS carries out both and if you need PAT testing and emergency lighting testing done at the same time, combining them in a single visit saves up to 25% and means one less disruption to the site.

Common Questions For PAT Testing Restaurants

Is PAT testing a legal requirement for restaurants?

Yes. Restaurants are commercial premises and employers have a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 to maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition. PAT testing is the recognised way to demonstrate that.

How often does a restaurant need PAT testing?

The HSE requires a risk based approach rather than a fixed interval. For most restaurant kitchen equipment, annually is the sensible baseline given the conditions involved. High use items in demanding environments requires more frequent testing.

What catering equipment needs PAT testing?

Anything that could pose a risk if it developed a fault. Back of house that covers ovens, fryers, mixers, fridges and food preparation equipment. Front of house that covers coffee machines, tills, display units, sound systems and plug in lighting. Staff area equipment including kettles, microwaves and laptops should be included too.

What happens if an item fails?

TISS Electrical photographs the failed item and includes it clearly in the report with a recommendation on repair or replacement. TISS does not carry out repairs but the documentation tells you exactly what needs attention and why.
